Numbers lie. Marks, sign-ups, and even profits often hide the real story.
I’ve chased numbers my whole career—admissions, revenue, even Hrriday’s report cards. They feel objective and safely true. But the longer I lead (and parent), the more I see what they miss.
A student’s confidence never shows up in a spreadsheet. A teacher staying late isn’t counted. A family finding calm mornings after a schedule change won’t appear on a dashboard.
We’ve had quarters when admissions dipped, yet classrooms came alive: shy learners speaking up, cross-border teams collaborating, a facilitator turning a plagiarism scare into a lesson on digital ethics. None of that fits neatly in a cell.
It forced me to rethink growth. It’s rarely clean. Often late. Mostly process—small rituals, tiny experiments, trust measured quietly. Read beyond the numbers and the real story appears: growth hides in the messy, the slow, the off-script—and it’s the kind that sticks.
Today, I want to share the rules we assume govern growth
(and the hidden rules that actually move children, teams, and families forward).
We’re taught simple rules for progress.
Do things earlier. Add more structure. Avoid failure.
In practice, those rules often backfire.
Here are three swaps that have served us better, both at school and at home.
Rule 1 (Myth): Timing is everything.
If it happens late, it’s a failure.
Reality: Purpose has its own clock.
My father left business to study scriptures and teach monks… decades after most people “settle.” From the outside, it looked late. From the inside, it was right on time. Parents feel this pressure too—board “choices” by a certain age, “achievements” by a certain grade. But forced timelines create anxious decisions that don’t fit a child.
Framework: Late ≠ Late.
Design small, honest tests and let timing reveal itself. Try a 30-day experiment: a mother-tongue dinner each week, a cross-border project, a calmer morning routine. Keep what works. Drop what doesn’t. Let evidence, not ego, set the pace.
Rule 2 (Myth): More rules create better discipline.
More policies, more boundaries = better behaviour.
Reality: Fewer rules + clearer values = ownership.
We simplified leave policies at 21K School because we trust adults to act like adults. Complexity looked “responsible”, but it created compliance, not care. At home, it’s similar: fewer but firmer rituals—device-off windows, one deep passion project, a weekly family check-in—work better than dozens of brittle rules.
Framework: Fewer rules, clearer values.
Write two non-negotiables (what we always do), two red lines (what we never do), and let the rest run on trust. Ownership grows in the space that rules once filled.
Rule 3 (Myth): Failure means it didn’t work.
If it doesn’t work first, it’s broken.
Reality: Iteration wins.
We failed at OKRs three times. The fourth time, we shrank the loop (weekly check-ins), made owners visible (no hiding), and kept a simple quarterly retrospective. Suddenly it clicked—not because the framework changed, but because our cadence did. Parenting and schooling need the same posture: try small, adjust fast, repeat.
Framework: Fail small, loop fast.
Pick one goal, one owner (even if the owner is your child), one weekly check-in, and one quarter-end reflection. Busy turns into better when the loop is light and lived.
